Objective Video games are a type of modern technology that has become popular and has attracted the attention of researchers to assess its effects of users. This study aims to determine the prevalence of video game addiction and its effects among paramedical students of Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences in Iran.

Data collection tool had two sections: Demographic information and video game addiction survey (effect of video games on physical/mental health and level of addiction). Data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 19 using chi-square test and Pearson correlation test. The significance level was set at 0.05.
Results The overall prevalence of video game addiction among students was 21.5% (17.2% with high addiction and 4.3% with very high addiction). The results showed that video game addiction increased aggression and violent behaviors (X2=33.04, P<0.05), reduced social interactions (X2=43.1, P<0.05), and interfered with doing everyday tasks (X2=28.8, P<0.05).
Conclusion Video game addiction by causing violent and aggressive behaviors, reducing interactions with others, and disrupting daily activities can lead to the isolation of students, physical and mental health problems, and academic failure.
