Introduction: Citation analysis is a valuable method for assessing the scientific impact of journals and authors by evaluating research performance through citation rates. In this context, the present study aims to determine the research status of researchers at Abadan University of Medical Sciences by conducting a citation analysis of articles published in Scopus and identifying their thematic areas based on the NLM classification.
Methods: The present study is of an applied nature, conducted with a scientometric approach, employing citation analysis. The study population consists of 148 articles affiliated with Abadan University of Medical Sciences, published in Scopus in 2023. The information sources cited, prolific authors and journals, highly cited articles, and participating countries are among the aspects examined in this study. Data collection was facilitated through the Scopus and Scimago databases, and data analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, Excel checklists, and descriptive statistical methods.
Results: A significant proportion of the articles were published in English. Farshid Ghanbari was identified as the most prolific author, and the Department of Basic Sciences was recognized as the most productive academic department. The United States of America ranked first among collaborating countries in article production. Among the NLM classification categories, the ‘WA’ category, representing the subject area of public health, was identified as the most prolific thematic area.
Discussion: In 2023, the research standing of researchers at Abadan University of Medical Sciences was relatively favorable; however, strategic planning by relevant policymakers could contribute to further advancement and improvement of this status.
