A unilateral focus on AI's capabilities proves insufficient; rather, the strengths and weaknesses of humans and machines must be viewed holistically to forge a truly complementary system. The successful future of AI in clinician–AI teaming lies not in supplanting clinicians, but in intelligently designing human–AI teams within a socio-technical framework marked by active clinical team involvement in design, appropriate interaction modality selection, adherence to practical explainability, and preservation of ultimate clinician control and accountability. This approach facilitates a transition from simple automation to genuine synergy, harnessing the complementary potential of clinicians and machines to meaningfully enhance clinical accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
