Introduction
The increasing popularity of social media in recent years has led scholars to share their research using various social networks. ResearchGate is one of the most popular scientific social networking sites among scholars such that most of them have became members of this network and use its features and services after registering and creating a profile. Faculty members, especially in medical sciences, are also the members of this site, using it as a communication channel. This study aims to investigate the presence of faculty members of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences (HUMS) in ResearchGate using Altmetrics approach.
Methods
This is a cross-sectional study. The study population consists of 521 faculty members of HUMS. Data was collected manually from January 15 to February 20, 2021. First, the names of the faculty members were searched in the scientific evaluation system and their profiles were examined. Their citations and h-index values in three databases of Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar were extracted. Then, their information was extracted by clicking on their ResearchGate links in the scientific evaluation system.
To analyze the data in SPSS v. 25, the normality of data from ResearchGate (RS score), Citations and h-index of Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar were examined using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Then, the non-parametric Spearman correlation test was used to assess the correlation of indicators.
Results
The findings showed that all faculties of HUMS were present in ResearchGate and 78.31% of the faculty members of this university had profiles in ResearchGate. Each person had 28.64±41.16 research items in this site. The results of Spearman’s correlation test showed a statistically significant positive correlation between the altimetric variable (RG Score) and citations and h-index of faculty members in the mentioned databases (Table 1).


The RG Score had a strong correlation with citations and h-index of ResearchGate, h-index of Web of Science and Google Scholar, and citations of Web of Science, while it had a moderate correlation with citations of Google Scholar. All ResearchGate indicators were correlated with each other. RG Score as the most important index in this network had a strong correlation with Citations, Research items, Total Research Interest, Recommendations, and h-index (Table 2).


Dissection
Interaction with other scholars in social scientific networks and sharing their works can increase the visibility of the works and consequently the possibility of their citation. The field of expertise and the nature of works can influence the activity of scholars in scientific social networks. ResearchGate provides a number of indicators for each scholar having a profile; some of these indicators can be used to measure the impact of each scholar. Adding the ResearchGate link in the profile of HUMS faculty members in the scientific evaluation system of the university is promising step that has been taken. To increase the interaction of faculty members of this university with others, the positive aspects of using scientific social networks should be taught through holding workshops and incentive policies.
